Burst Testing
Burst Testing
Guidance Documents –
ISO 11607
ASTM F1140 - Standard Test Methods for Internal Pressurization Failure Resistance of Unrestrained Packages
ASTM F2054 - Standard Test Method for Burst Testing of Flexible Package Seals Using Internal Air Pressurization Within Restraining Plates
What is it?
The burst test is performed by pressurizing the package until it bursts. The results for the burst test include the burst pressure data and a description of where the seal failure occurred.
There are a number of burst types that can be carried out as per the ASTM standards (ASTM F1140, ASTM F2054) including Dynamic / Static burst, Creep test and Creep to fail. These tests can be carried out either on open or closed packages. These types of burst tests can be carried out using either unrestrained or restrained methods.
Why do it?
- Used to measure and quantify the strength of Medial Device Package Sterile Barrier Systems as well as other sealed flexible packages.
- The burst test is used to determine the packages weakest point.
