CE Marking
What is CE Marking?
- CE marking is a mandatory conformance mark for products placed on the market in the European Economic Area (EEA). The CE mark is designed to enable free trade around European Union (EU) member states. CE marking is the only marking which symbolises conformity to all the obligations incumbent on the manufacturers for the product as required by the applicable directives providing for its affixing.
- It is important to note that the CE mark is not an indicator of quality nor is it intended for customers. It is strictly a legally binding statement declaring that the manufacturer of the product has met the relevant requirements.
What are the implications for your company?
- It is the ultimate responsibility of the European manufacturer, and in the case of non-European products, the importers, to carry out the due diligence and ensure that their product meets the necessary standards in order to obtain the CE marking. This means that they are aware of what is required of them and that they demonstrate compliance with the relevant applicable directives by carrying out a conformity assessment, setting up a technical file and signing an EU declaration of conformity.
- The risks inherent in not conforming properly to the directives are many and the consequences can be costly. Furthermore the use of your resources to focus on this non-core but essential activity can also be a costly business activity.
